Homo erectus is an extinct species of archaic human that appeared about two million years ago in East
Africa and disappeared about 150,000 years ago. Its name refers to the fact that it stands straight. Homo erectus, more recent than Homo habilis, is also larger, since it measured between 160 and 180 cm. Its brain volume, of the order of 800 to 1,200 cm3, is greater than that of Homo habilis. His skull shows a reduction in the face, the masticatory apparatus and a certain "smoothing" of the bony reliefs.
Homo erectus is the first man to domesticate fire; he invented new tools such as the biface, a symmetrical tool cut on two sides. The bifaces are typical of the Acheulean culture. He is also a frequent traveler who was the first man to leave the African cradle to go to Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
